Buried under a car park since the 1970s, the riverside pleasure gardens seemed lost for good — until a single surviving nursery list surfaced in the city archive, naming every bed planted in 1898.
Volunteers replanted from that list, relaid the paths stone by stone, and reopened the gates last spring. Volunteering on the dig taught the team more about their city in one summer than a lifetime of walking past it.
