Preserve first
Every intervention starts with research and documentation. We repair before we replace, and we never erase the marks time has left behind.

About Us
Ancestra Members Council unites people who believe heritage is not just history — it’s a living connection between yesterday and tomorrow.
1986
Nearly forty years of safeguarding the stories that shaped our world.
Our Story
Founded in 1986 by a circle of historians, architects, and neighbours, the Ancestra Members Council began with a single threatened chapel roof and a simple conviction: that old places carry the memory of everyone who built, prayed, worked, and celebrated in them.
Today our members — craftspeople, researchers, artists, and volunteers — care for more than 120 historic sites, run 42 cultural programmes a year, and keep a digital archive of 40,000 documents open to everyone.
What We Believe
01
Every intervention starts with research and documentation. We repair before we replace, and we never erase the marks time has left behind.
02
Exhibitions, open sites, school programmes, and free digital archives — heritage belongs to everyone, so we keep every door we can open.
03
Neighbours, volunteers, and craftspeople work side by side on every project. A restored place matters most to the people who restored it.
1986
Twelve neighbours form the Ancestra circle to save the leaking roof of Willow Lane Chapel.
1998
The council restores its tenth site and opens the first public archive reading room in Edinburgh.
2011
Membership passes 1,000. The volunteer programme launches with summer schools in traditional crafts.
2024
The digital archive goes online with 40,000 documents, and chapters span seventeen regions.
